Baldwin Hills, Los Angeles has a rich history, including its origins as part of a Mexican rancho, the development of communities in the 1920s, and the construction of the Baldwin Hills Reservoir:

* Rancho La Cienega o Paso de la Tijera
In 1843, Governor Manuel Micheltorena granted 4,481.5 acres of land to Vicente Sánchez, which included the area that is now Baldwin Hills. The name translates to "Swamp or Pass of the Scissors" and refers to the trail that cut through the hills, which resembled open scissors. By 1886, Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin, a 19th-century pioneer, had acquired most of the land.

* Development of communities
In the 1920s, communities began to develop in the rolling hills of South Los Angeles. The area was known for its oil derricks and conflicts between syndicates, and it also had a reputation for being a dump site for a murder, peat fires, and a narcotics ring meet-up place.

* Baldwin Hills Reservoir
Construction on the Baldwin Hills Reservoir took place between 1947 and 1951. On December 14, 1963, the dam that held the reservoir's 250 million gallons of water breached, killing five people and causing around $11 million in property damage. The reservoir is now part of the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, and a plaque was placed at the site in 2013 to mark the 50th anniversary of the disaster.

*

Baldwin Hills has also been home to the first Olympic Village, built in 1932 for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The area is now an upscale neighborhood with nice views, and has been home to celebrities like Ray Charles and Tina Turner.
